Here’s an Ebbinghaus Nudge for those of you who Here’s an Ebbinghaus Nudge for those of you who watched my Tea Break Coach last week. ☕

If the algorithms meant you missed it, head to YouTube link via the #LinkInBio — it’s worth watching for the view alone (the sea not me!). I record these sessions at my new training and meeting venue by the sea that’s now available to hire (with or without me as a facilitator).

Those of you who watched will know that I borrowed the Top Right Model that I had drawn on the floor in preparation for a client meeting, to explain my top tip for leaders in a quick 4-minute video.

Maybe watch it again and do a quick team or self-coaching session using theTop Right Questions from my recent Tea Break Coach.

On reflection, which box have you spent too much time in this week?

What excuses have you made to yourself that made that OK? (NB no guilt/judgement here, we all do it – blame our wiring!)

What ONE thing could you do right now that would be a Top Right activity?

Whose feedback could you seek to enable you to spend more time in the Top Right Box in general?

Have a great week and weekend and see you next Friday on LinkedIn for another Tea Break Coach by the sea. 🌊

What makes a workplace bully? Is there a clear l What makes a workplace bully?

Is there a clear line for you?

That’s the question I was asked live on Nicky Campbell’s show on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC News last week.

I’ve had more time to reflect on that question since I was asked it in the moment (and I’m not under the pressure of lots of people listening in!)

However, I think my answer remains the same.

Have a watch of this extract from the BBC news and let me know what you think.

I have gate-crashed tomorrow’s promised ‘second green jumper’ episode of Tea Break Coach on arm folding to expand on Top Right Thinking instead to follow up on this idea.

I’m hoping that tomorrow’s 3-minute tea break coach video (released from 8.30am on LinkedIn and available to watch whenever suits you) enables anyone to have a clear, research and science-led way to challenging people to get great results at work, without being labelled a ‘bully’ and without accidentally reducing their ability to perform at their best.

See you over on LinkedIn tomorrow!

Sun coming up in gorgeous @Tynemouth! It’s a lov Sun coming up in gorgeous @Tynemouth! It’s a lovely day to welcome people to come and work with me!

The view is not just a gorgeous backdrop for Instagram…the science suggests we are more likely to come up with our best creative or strategic ideas when this is our backdrop…

Going to sneak in a quick Tea Break Coach video whilst I have the Top Right Grid marked out on the floor with purple tape!!

You can watch it tomorrow from 8.30 on Linked in or my You Tube
Ebbinghaus Nudge from The Arm Folding Lady! If y Ebbinghaus Nudge from The Arm Folding Lady!

If you watched my last 3-minute Tea Break Coach video on LinkedIn you will know what I’m going on about! ☕

If not, that will be as clear as mud but you can watch it again via the #LinkInBio.

If you did fold your arms along with me, think about what you have done with the power of that science in your real life since. If the answer is nothing then hey, so far so normal…

I share a really powerful but sad example when I’m training people in fast-changing environments. About why it’s normal that due to our brain wiring and our brilliant bespoke excuses, only 1 in 7 of us would be able to change our habits — even if our lives depended on it.

Given business isn’t life or death, we have to assume that our odds of embracing a change we don’t particularly want in the workplace are way worse than 1 in 7. However, with every difficult truth comes an opportunity.

When we know the science and the tricks that our brains play on us, we can make choices to be the exception to the rule. We might need to accept they will be uncomfortable choices, like folding your arms the wrong way. But when we experience the discomfort and push on through (for an average of 66 days according to research from UCL), we can prove to ourselves that our plastic brains really can form new positive habits or learn almost anything whatsoever.

For more info on this see It’s Not Bloody Rocket Science — this great research is on page 170 in the second edition.

There is a Part 2 on this topic coming this Friday, just so you don’t see the green jumper/wet hair combo and think “Been there seen that…”!

See you Friday - by the sea! 🌊

On BBC News with Nicky Campbell on Friday talking On BBC News with Nicky Campbell on Friday talking about workplace bullying.

There is simply no work-place or boss on earth that should excuse making some of the guests on that show feel as they did.

The link to the show is here

 https://lnkd.in/d5dZ5PDS

Here’s why bullying is, not only, deeply uncool - it also makes zero business sense:

1) Our brains simply don’t work as well when we feel threatened.

2) Worrying or talking about your boss means you are multi-tasking - it’s not bloody rocket science - there will be a reduction in the quality or the speed of other work.

3) Our brains are wired to like challenge - but from someone we trust and feel safe with.

We are smarter and more likely to take well balanced risks when we feel safe and challenged - AT THE SAME TIME not one and then the other.

No leader intends to limit performance - so it is helpful to know the science that proves how things we say and do have this unintended consequence.
